ok, I was wrong.
I thought that the gamepad made the camera point in to somting black and therefore made the screen turn black.

Without the gamepad it seem to work. connecting gamepad...

I got the problem back after I plugged my usb gamepad in. But now it only is in maps and not in the menu. going to reboot now with the gamepad not connected.

I had to update my card's drivers. I have a ATI card but updating the driver for your nVidia card could solve the problem.

But now my mouse is acting up, only able to look at the sky.
And I get those black screens sometimes.
Edit: black screens all the time.

I found a solution:
Changing "ScreenWindowed = 0" to "ScreenWindowed = 1" in preferences.txt
For some reason it works now, in window mode that is.

But...

I am greeted with the first loading screen but after that the screen goes black but the ambient sound seam to work.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
2GB of DDR2
ATI Radeon HD 4850
