Yup, fiddling with my preferences solved this for me. It previously had ScreenW and ScreenH both at zero.

I've noticed this too, particularly when constructing very large buildings. My workers will typically not install some of the lights (maybe 15% of them) and if I'm constructing power at the same time they'll forget about some of those too. I have exactly the same problem - though it affects ALL text entry fields. First time I played I couldn't set my player name.

It's intermittent though, but it seems not to work more often than it works.

I'm on a IBM thinkpad, roughly 3 years old which otherwise runs defcon perfectly.
