Switching off my multi-monitor setup seems to have fixed it, runs fine now. 8) Edit: for anyone who's found this thread, switching back to 175.19 brings the problem back (though not quite as bad), so the upgrade to 177 was needed (not as stable on my system) as well as disabling the other monitors. ...

I'm getting a really bad framerate as the game loads (the screen with the spinning darwinian), like one frame every 5-10 seconds.
