I did a quickie tutorial on shape files way way back that you might find of some use. Its at http://www.nihilesthetics.info/DarwiniaModding/ModdingDarwinia.htm in the shape files - intro link, or go directly here http://www.nihilesthetics.info/DarwiniaModding/ShapeFiles.htm . If you can find any err...

This NaNoWriMo thing sound interesting. I had a look and I think I might try it myself. Im with him on the writing thing, I usually run out of steam after about 200 words. I then hit a mental block. My palms sweat and I have to go back and edit those 200 hundred words to my satisfaction, correcting ...

The sounds.txt file doesnt go in the darwinia folder, it goes in a folder 'data' within your Darwinia folder. This folder isnt there by default so you will have to create it. So it would be something like c:\program files\darwinia\data\sounds.txt ( or whatever the mac equivalent is ). If that doesnt...

Where is your sounds.txt file? I think sounds.txt still cant be in your mod folder. Its one of the few files that has to be in <darwinia_root>/data/ folder. Try creating a data folder in your Darwinia root folder and moving the sounds file there. Note that you can put your sounds folder in the mod f...

Other people have mentioned that. In retrospect it could have been clearer. Ive rewritten the first few paragraphs on the sounds file tutorial. Hosting is playing up so you cant see the tut at the moment, but here is an excerpt At the most simple level, the sounds file tells the game what sound to p...

Well, I might have predicted TGF would think that. But if you look closely at my remark, I was actually refering to talented authors, not conceited authors. How modest of you to proclaim yourself on that list ;) Notwithstanding TGFs magnum opus, I think the modding ground is still very fertile and h...

Very interesting. Like you say, its easy to look back now and pontificate on how the game could have been more modular, but the overheads in testing for such a flexible system on all the different platforms would have put an end to the whole project. I agree that the only realistic way for IV to enh...

I agree with the last post. However, there may be some small merit in using what is there to test multiplayer maps for when IV do release a multiplayer patch. But thats probably a long way off, if it ever happens. If you do want to play with it, you must have the first octet in your servers IP addre...

I tried this some time ago and I came across several problems, some of which were 1. Starting the level. I found that if I didnt start the level almost simultaneously on both the client and server, they were not in sync - that is instant unit locations and distribution were not the same on client an...

Ive got a fansite that contains one or two tutorials for modding Darwinia. Ive actually had a couple of people emailing me and asking about how to do a translation. I dont know how, but if any of the people who have done their own translation and/or added language-specific characters could write a s...

Mods in the pipeline
Is anybody actually working on new mods? Talking about new mods seems to have dried up. Also, mention of new mods is mostly from people who are just starting out with modding and their finished mods seem a long way off. I also noticed that a lot of veteran posters havnt released mods for a very long...
