I can get up to a perfectly reasonable rate (+20 fps) much of the time, until I am involved in a pitched battle between green and red darwinians. Then it drops to about 2 fps. Graphics and sound options seem to make a difference of only 2 or 3 fps at best. Clearly the AI of the little critters kills...
