Re: It's all in your head, Part 14
So when I’m firing my ar15 carbine at the zombies in left4dead, the half-life engine is (almost certainly) doing a ray-hit-versus-triangle test, testing the line out of the barrel of my gun against the triangle mesh that is the zombie in front of me. When it detects a hit (and it will, because I’m ...

Re: Platform Preferences
More to the point, the whole demo integration thing with the 360 is wonderful – downloading demos is as easy as it could be. No installation issues, no bittorrent, no searching for a download mirror that doesn’t cover my screen in adverts and make me click “yes download this file now” and “no I don...

Lobby sounds play during games: Vista / Realtek HD Audio
Driver version 1.65, the latest. The menu "music" never fades out and plays behind the in-game sound. No obvious issues apart from this!

[TIP] Catalyst AI and Defcon
A warning to anyone with the same issue as me (and a word in IV's ear!): Defcon does not like Catalyst AI when set to Advanced - at least on mobility X1800 cards.
If your screen looks like this, move the Catalyst AI slider, found under the 3D menu option, to Standard.

Things have improved for no apparent reason. The menu still runs at with single-figure FPS, but it is far more responsive and I was even able to start a rolling demo - at which point everything collapsed again, but it still wasn't as bad as it had been at first. Only change has been the recent Steam...

I can run the games if I forced windowed mode. However, neither scratch even 1FPS on the lowest settings. There is no way Defcon's menu is this demanding - it's all down to CPU overload anyway, even for Darwinia. There was a thread about this sort of thing on dual core systems last time I was here, ...
