The devs stated an earlier alpha video that there is no real order for the sorting or color coding. I'm sure this is something that will be changed as we get closer to the official release. They said that there used to be a reason for the colour coding, but the can't remember what it was. And yeah,...

I would say that 1 - 3 guard prisoner ratio is very overkill, But as soon as you get gang leaders it probably won't be. You still don't have enough guards to stop a gang from controlling the yard. Promote some to leaders and see what happens.

Problem is that although prisoners get contraband from visitors, the visitors themselves never actually carry it, so searching a visitor would not be of any benefit.

Yes it is something modders could do probably, but as someone who doesn't play with mods it would be nice to see some of the popular mods in the game. Can't be done, because any code that would stop a prisoner from being able to go through the door would also stop them from trying to escape vai the door, making it the only door in the game that a prisoner can't get/break through.
