"Assertion Failed" error when launching DEFCON tut

Postby aroza » Tue Dec 20, 2011 12:06 am

Hi,

I just purchased DEFCON on Steam, and whenever I try to start the tutorial, i get an Assertion Failed error and the program crashes back to the desktop.
I can start a new game or join a game, or launch the rolling demo without issues.

My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Here's the Windows Crash Report

My situation is about the same as the original poster's. I just bought the game on Steam and everything, save for the tutorial (for which I get the same error as described above), works.

Got the same issue:

Assertion failed 'index < m_arraySize && index >=0'

c:\development\defcon\contrib\systemiv\lib\tosser\darray.cpp line number 201

Running Steam 1.61 under Windows 7 Ultimate.

Happens everytime with the tutorial and randomly in the main game (usually near the end of a round).

Same problem. Sad.
Works ok on my one machine (win7 64 Ult, Gtx260) but I just bought a laptop to run games like these (not very intensive performance wise) and it gets this error.
Like I said, i bought a laptop to run these exact types of games so this is frustrating. Plus i bought a referb so I would hate to think this is some sort of symptom of a lemon of a laptop.

Anyhow, my specs are...

Operating System
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

CPU Type
AMD Quad-Core A6-3400M 1.4GHz

Screen
15.6"

Memory Size
4GB DDR3

Hard Disk
500GB

Graphics Card
AMD Radeon HD 6650 Graphics

Video Memory
1GB

CPU

CPU Type
AMD A-Series

CPU Speed

Same here

Postby Pabbles » Thu Dec 22, 2011 9:04 pm

Same here.

This won't immediately help anyone, but I'd like to add that 'assertions' are lines the programmer himself puts in his code when debugging. Using them, he voluntarily throws program stopping exceptions at himself when the condition of the assertion isn't met.

I guess that if there was a recent update, someone forgot to change the build to "Release" (which usually doesn't include debug code). Maybe the tutorial could still run if that index didn't meet those conditions, it's the debug-only code that stops it.

Nice game by the way, I come from Uplink, which made me watch Wargames, which made me consider buying this until the steam gift pile thing. I also got slaughtered good on my first, un-tutorialed try :D

I have this problem too (Win 7 x64 Premium French).

The problem seems to lie somewhere in the steam version since the standalone version works fine on the same computer (both versions installed on the C: disk)

I've been having the exact same problem. I'm on Windows XP Pro.

This is especially frustrating since I can't figure out for the life of me how to play this game when I just jump into a new game. Things are happening, little numbers and letters show up, but I don't understand any of it or what my goal is supposed to be. I can't figure out how to zoom in or even change my name from "New Player"! I desperately need this tutorial, at least so I learn what functions are mapped to what key and what the goal of this game even is.
