I filled out the contact form on IV's site, and sent them a note to their twitter feed.

I feel bad cuz i convinced a friend to buy the game with me yesterday, and now we are both out $10. =/

There are known issues with Steam authentication. There is currently a patch in beta which should fix those issues.

Please accept our apologies for this problem. We are currently beta testing a steam update that will fix this problem completely - we appreciate your patience.

Those of you experiencing this problem, could you please do a test for us? We may have a temporary workaround.

We've done some further testing and believe we have solved the problem properly now. Defcon under Steam should work fine without any error messages.

If steam users could give it a try, and report back here, that would be very helpful. Thanks!

- Go to your Steam Defcon folder (something like H:\games\Steam\steamapps\common\defcon), and delete the authkey file
- Run defcon in steam
- You should see the Steam authentication dialog in the centre of the screen
- You will then see a "success" message, but probably only for a fraction of a second. The status at the bottom of the screen will say "Accepted"

At this point things may be working fine for you. Alternatively, you may get this:
- Immediately after, you'll get a "dropped by steam" type error message
- The steam dialog changes to say "failed"
- In the next dialog that says "You may play as the demo user", DO NOT click on the "Play Demo" button, as it will switch you into demo mode. Instead, close that window with the close button in the top right.
- You should be in full-game mode now.

Let us know if this helps you.

Apologies for this problem, we are working on a more permanent fix.

I had deleted my AuthKey after the last attempt, so I fired up Steam/Defcon.

Authentication succeeded this time; and I have a valid key that begins with STEAM.

Not sure what you did, but thanks! I'm getting my friend to try it too.

EDIT: worked for my friend too. Thanks again. Look forward to the patch!

Hi,
I just purchased the game last night off of Steam, tried to play and got the same authentication errors as everyone else on this page. Mine also says it has an invalid key. I see you've solved the problem for many people but mine is still reporting an error.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Also, every time I boot now it starts me automatically in Demo Mode.

Now working...

Send an email to their support and they'll send you back a working key. They also said that the new Steam patch should fix the problems.
