Blank Screen, won't load anything

Postby wankerman » Wed Sep 02, 2009 4:37 pm

Ok after a million times trying, and looking on this forum for the same example and solutions, I have finally decided to ask her help, I really hope someone can help.
Defcon is installed fine and it loads no problem, but when I click on new game, the screen remains blank. The green and the DEFCON logo are still there but nothing happens. At the bottom is a text box it seems when you click on it, it bring up the Public/Alliances box, but that is all that happens. When you click Join Game it brings up the menu, but nothing ever appears, and when you click on Tutorial it always says it's starting, but again nothing happens. My game is registered, my online connection is fine, and my computer is definetly not outdated and I have updated video drivers. Does this game use Flash at all, maybe it is an issue with that?
of all the examples on the board I haven't seen one where someone mentions the Public/Alliances box being at the bottom, but everything is blank, other than the neon green stuff. Can someone help? Thanks so much

This problem seems very familiar. Can you tell us what OS you have and which version of Defcon you're using?

Defcon with the patch so it is 1.43 it says in the bottom corner and Windows XP Version 2002 Home Edition Service Pack 3. I also forgot to mention, I guess when the menu appears when you first start the game, there are other neon green graphics on the left showing bomb facts and in the background is a globe spinning around, but this does not even occur, it is just the menu screen, version in the bottom left, Defcon in the corner. Now I can access other parts of the menu, but the same things happen like I stated in the previous post. Thanks!

I don't suppose you could post a screenshot of exactly what you see? I'm trying to work out where I've heard this problem before...

Alt+Print Scrn or Ctrl+Print Scrn will work.

Paste into Paint, and save as .png and host.

This does sound like the issue with the non-working communication between the client and server component of the game. There have been at least two root causes for this reported so far:
1. a misconfigured network. No network at all usually works, and a standard LAN setup usually works, too. But if you modified your hosts file for some reason, you may have confused Defcon with that. If you don't know what a hosts file is, then you probably didn't modify it, and your problem more likely is
2. A firewall software overzealously blocking the network traffic. Disable your firewall temporarily to check that. And, if your firewall is Norton, get rid of it somehow while you're at it.

The only thing I use is AVG which I don't think has a firewall, and then just basic Windows XP firewall. I have tried it, with the firewall disabled and the same thing occurs.
Here are my images.

Now also with the firewall I added an exception for Defcon and it didn't work, and I followed a suggestion with the port forwarding, forwarding ports 5008-5011 to get it to work as well but that did nothing. Thanks again.

Interesting. You say Defcon is installed fine; how exactly did you install it?

Just installed it from the setup file, installed it to a folder in program files and that is it, I don't understand it. I recently updated my flash player but I'm assuming Flash has nothing to do with it? Now what about video card? I am using an ATI Radeon 9200 series card, but have zero issues on it, and I can run many high graphic games with it no problem, so I don't see how Defcon would not work properly? Also should I get different screenshots? Thanks again everyone this is crazy there are so many problems with this game.

I suppose it could be the drivers for that card as it's very old and ATI no longer supports it. I have a 9600xt AIW, and the last time I tried to use new, barely supported drivers, I had issues with DEFCON. I had to revert back to older drivers.

Thats no issue with your graphics card or flash.
Its a network issue, pretty sure, i am. Either you have to try harder with your firewall. Or your setup for local network is broken.

Hmm, we should rule out pure graphics problems, those shots do look odd. What happens when you click 'rolling demo'?
