Problem Starting Any Game

Postby Phaid » Wed Sep 24, 2008 1:39 am

I have the standalone copy Defcon supplied on CD from Introversion and it worked fine on my old machine. I have now upgraded to a new machine running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit edition and it just won't work.

The game will get to the main menu and says I have the latest version but if I select new game or join game then it freezes.

My graphics card driver, sound card driver and directx are all the latest versions. In line with the sticky post at the top, here is all the information requested.

There is no blackbox.txt file in the Defcon directory but here are the contents of the debug.txt file

To be honest, the game haven't been tested for 64 bits, currently I don't think any of the devs have a 64 bits Windows.

Crash on new game or join game are most of the time network related,

I would perhaps try to update your network card drivers,

Add Defcon to your firewall(s)?

Does it simply hang or crash with a Windows error dialog? (If you get the dialog please get a screenshot with the option to get more information about the crash)

Error message

It is not just join or new game, it even does it on Tutorial. My firewall is setup to allow it and I have the latest network card drivers so it's not that.

It just hangs there and the sound cuts out. If I press ctrl alt and delete and select task manager then it comes up with a pop up window that just says

"Defcon has stopped working

A Problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

It just has a close program button on the dialog box.

I have tried the various compatibility modes under the properties for the executable but all options give the same error.

Latest debug.txt has a couple of extra lines which are as follows:-

CLIENT : Disconnected
EclRemoveWindow failed on window LOBBY

Hope all this helps.

Is there on that dialog a link/button to get more information? If yes, could you post what it tells you exactly (with screenshot?).

Which Anti-virus/Firewall/Anti-spyware/content-filtering are you using? (Does disabling them helps?)

There isn't a dialog box to get further information but here is what I have found in the problem history for when it crashes

I am using Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 and Comodo Pro Firewall. Disabling both of these does not help with the issue.

The crash comes from BFLLR.DLL, and this page says it's part of your network card driver. The problem is probably with them. I think you should file a support request with Bigfoot; they should be able to debug the problem and, if they can't solve it, tell IV what exactly they're doing wrong.

Thread about the same problem: http://forums.introversion.co.uk/defcon ... php?t=6276

Side note: I personaly think the KillerNIC is a scam (by that I mean it doesn't do anything you can't get cheaper by getting a better CPU, unless of course you have the best CPU money can buy), and I find it questionable that they modify the system with a DLL instead of doing things in the driver (of course, that's the whole idea of the thing, but then they should make it work.)

I had the same problem, but was able to fix it by reinstalling and patching to 1.42, not 1.43. The only difference between 1.42 and 1.43 is an exploit fix, but I think you can still play with people who have 1.43.

Beats me what is causing the issue, but it must be something in the 1.43 patch.
