Defcon runs really slow - (Solution found !)

Postby Aky » Fri Dec 28, 2007 10:42 am

Hello

When the first demo was released, i tried it on my computer, and it was awesome, no problem at all, etc.

Now, I just bought Defcon on steam, but the game runs really slow.
I tried the demo, and it's the same
My computer was formated yesterday, so it's "clean"

My config :
AMD X2 3800+
2Go RAM
Nvidia 7900 GT
Windows XP Pro SP2

I have the last driver from NVidia (169.21)

I tried an opengl dll in the folder of Defcon, but it run's a lot slower

My computer has enough power to run it. Many months ago, when the demo was released, there was no problem at all... I tried everything (smooth lines disable, changing resolution from 1600x1200 to 800x600, small fonts, etc.)
So I have only 3 questions :

1)Has someone a solution ?
2)If not, maybe it's from the game patches ?
3)Or, I think it's maybe from latest Nvidia drivers... The have maybe a problem with openGL.... Maybe Introversion can contact them to fix that on their next driver

Thank you (and sorry for my poor english !)

Here is my dxdiag :

Re: Defcon runs really slow here too

How slow? When a game is running, you can get the FPS displayed with F1. I ask because some people think 60 FPS is slow :)

Aky wrote:1)Has someone a solution ?
Sorry, not yet.
Aky wrote:2)If not, maybe it's from the game patches ?
Possibly. For testing this yourself, you can download the 1.0 version of the demo here: http://download.introversion.co.uk/defc ... 2-v1.0.exe
Aky wrote:3)Or, I think it's maybe from latest Nvidia drivers... The have maybe a problem with openGL.... Maybe Introversion can contact them to fix that on their next driver
Unlikely; I've got a very similar setup here (7900 GTX, that I've got an Intel CPU is the only significant difference) and see no performance problems with drivers 163.75 and 169.21, so unless the problem is specific to your CPU type or the very precise GPU type, it is not the driver's fault. You did get the NVidia driver directly from NVidia's website and not, by chance, from Microsoft?

You can try other OpenGL games to see how they perform for you. Shameless plug for the one I'm involved with (it's free and a small download): http://www.armagetronad.net/ It's also very minimalistic and should get smooth graphics unless there is something wrong with your setup somewhere.

Odd, you're the second person (at least) who tried such a thing, what gave you the idea? Copying an opengl.dll file over to the game installation directory was the way to go in ye olde days of Quake 1/2 and the VooDoo cards, but nowadays, it is pretty much useless for gaming.

I FOUND A SOLUTION !!! MOUHAHAHAHA !!!

(Sorry, it's because i've seen that a lot of people here had the same problem, and i found a solution)

And guess what.... It's because of Nvidia drivers !!!

Latest drivers :
169.21 : game runs slow, low FPS, and CPU usage is at 50-60% !!! (AMD X2 3800+)

Old drivers ( http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.47.html )
91.47 : game runs with NO PROBLEM ! Normal, perfect ! .... And CPU usage is at 10% !

So i think there is a problem with Nvidia drivers and OpenGL in latest drivers

I hope that Defcon's developpers can talk to Nvidia about that and try to fix it on their next drivers

I guess it's my fault, I give this trick all the time in Uplink forum :D

aha :)

And just for the record, I myself see no such huge difference between the two driver versions quoted here (and in fact, 91.47 runs slightly slower than 163.75 in the nonrepresentative one benchmark I ran). So there must me some other influence at work for Aky.

I've been installing/uninstalling various Nvidia drivers to try and get my game to run.

With 91.47, the game doesn't even start, but the error report singles out nvoglnt.dll as being missing/the cause of my problem :?

I installed 169.21, and the game now starts, but the frame rates are so poor as to render it unplayable.

I was just wondering what the significance of nvoglnt.dll might be?

Well, taking the name apart:
nv: NVIdia
ogl: OpenGL
nt: Windows NT (which 2K and XP are based on)

It's indeed nVidia OpenGL driver.

Mac Version CPU usage is off the charts! What gives?

Postby cshamis » Mon Mar 31, 2008 5:20 am

When I play on my new Macbook Pro the laptop fans kick into high gear after only a few minutes and the game is only playable for an hour before it completely drains the battery.

The window manager is eating 80% of one CPU and DEFCON is taking 90% of the other. Something is screwed up, this game isn't *THAT* demanding... Makes me think everything is going through the software rendering...

I'm running:
DEFCON 1.4.3,
OSX Leopard (10.5.2)
4GB Ram
2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Penryn)
nVidia 8600GT w/ 512

Try posting over at the AmbrosiaSW forums - they handle all mac version issues, I believe. ;)

Actually, the game is that demanding. It doesn't look it, because the graphics are meant to look all retro and stuff, but there are 10s of thousands of calls to the GPU and CPU every frame. So, rather than telling us how the computer performs, maybe let us know how the game performs? Is it slow? How many frames per second (you can find that by opening up the system profiler from within the tools menu in DEFCON)?

Well, as near as I can tell things are wicked smooth. The game runs just fine, or as near as I can tell it does. The little red tick marks never come more than half way to the 5ms mark (20 fps). Which doesn't really tell me anything concrete...

Nonetheless, I just don't think that a brand new notebook running one of the fastest dual core processors should cave at 90% usage on BOTH core's just to run this game. Oh... and 974 "whatevers" is about the time the profiler reported in "render." If the GPU was doing the heavy lifting then why is the profiler reporting that it's having to spend all it's time in render?... it just sounds fishy to me...

I am going to take your advice and post this over at the ambrosia site, maybe they'll have some ideas.

I'm also going to download the linux version and drop it on my 1.4 GHz single-core athlon XP, with my GeForce 4 Ti 4200 card and see how that performs. If it runs like a greased-weasel as I anticipate, then I'll know something is wonky on the mac version. :-)

Well, I run the linux version on my q6600, and it never spills over to 2 cores... does hog about 50% of one, though - DEFCON isn't the most efficient beast ever written. :P
