So I got a new (old) graphics card from a friend. He had this same problem with it.
When I turn on whiteboard in Defcon and draw on it, after some time (a certain amount of drawing I presume) the whole screen (defcon windowed) freezes, the screen goes blank for a while and ATI (or AMD, whatever) software reports the driver has crashed and recovered. This crashes Defcon too.
Ever heard of this? Anyone else use an ATI Radeon HD 4800?

Re: Whiteboard crashes Radeon display drivers and Defcon
I think overheating is unlikely because the card endures other heavy loads for long periods of time just fine and the fan doesn't react at all before the crash happens. Dust has been cleaned but I've thought about adding new thermal paste.
I'll try to do some testing to see if display configurations or other running software affect.
Defcon isn't as good without whiteboard
