In that case, it is a stupid question. Why "master" a technique that automatically cripples you from the outset? The only reason that high level players ever play without a queen is if they are so much better than the other player that they need to make a major sacrifice in order to even the field. No one "masters" play without the queen. They master the game, and tie their hands behind their backs in order to make things equal when playing much weaker opponents.

Similarly, why not ask why no elite Defcon players have not mastered playing the game without silos.

I have done this on accident and on purpose. Against some players it's not all that difficult. I've seen others do it as well.
