Youtube videos or strategy screencasts?

Postby Barbarossa » Sun Jul 11, 2010 8:10 am

Sorry if this has been asked before, but are there any good video sources like youtube, vimeo, etc videos where a beginner such as myself can use to reference and improve skill of play?

I know there are verbal plenty of tips and strategies on this forum but was wondering if there are also more multimedia "instructional guides" to the nuances of this game. Many of the youtube and screenshot links of posts in the past (2007-2009) are dead and no longer point to valid entities.

Has anyone made screencasts of teaching strategy with fraps and uploaded to youtube or elsewhere? Is there a central repository for recorded plays? Thanks

Thanks, I will give them a view.. As a side note (aside from Defcon) is it just me or is YouTube getting really slow lately? You'd think with Google's deep pockets they can afford to keep subsidizing Youtube and not have to resort to throttling bandwidth... I'm on a 18Mbps connection at home and 80Mbps at school so I know my internet connection isn't the problem.. Even when I'm choosing the non-HD version it seems the streaming can't catch up with the video, and at 1080p (for those that support it) on fullscreen its still WAY LOWER quality compared to Vimeo on default!

Even though I'm a relative new comer to this game, I've tried to make a few videos of my own (just as a test..) and I have a few questions.. I know the most efficient way to learn is to replay the recordings (which are very small files 100-400kb in size..) but screenshots and videos have their uses too. The built in screenshot mechanism in defcon works just fine, though why save it as a bitmap when a high quality compressed jpeg is 1/10th the filesize and image quality appears no different?

I use fraps to record the game, but it seems even when replaying the fraps recording (avi) in VLC player the recording is still not as sharp as I would like it to be (yes I'm recording at fullscreen.. at 30fps) Then also the problem that even a few minutes of video recording in fraps comes out to be 2 Gigabytes+ worth of avi! It's totally ridiculous! I have to use virtualdub to get the video size down to a reasonable size for uploading to youtube/vimeo/etc.. But even when I'm using the best codecs, I noticed that after conversion/compression the color is somewhat milder, the red isn't as red, blue isn't as blue.. not sure what I'm doing wrong here.. basically the color/hue fidelity is gone...

I made a few defcon videos here at youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/barbarossa2012
and also mirrored them at Vimeo : http://www.vimeo.com/user4244180

They are from the same source video, but when you zoom in (fullscreen) on both, the Vimeo videos are MUCH sharper and higher qualitiy than the Youtube videos, even when Youtube is at the HD version... and youtube for me at least takes orders of magnitude longer to stream...
