Idle Ships, Why!?!?!

Postby Ace Rimmer » Fri Sep 14, 2007 4:07 pm

Alright fellow Defcon players, I must ask this simple question; why in the world would you leave ships idle? I see this mainly in 1v1's.

Is it because those carriers are empty? Then send them home and refill them! Is it because you have no airbases with which to refill those empty carriers? Then use them as a distraction/sub sweeper. Is it because you think you've lost the game? Well, I've come back with less, so don't try that excuse the game isn't over till it says "Game Over". Is it because you're lazy/don't care? *slaps face* Wake up! Don't give in to temptation!

There is no valid reason for leaving a ship idle unless you've completely wiped out the other players entire navy and all four airbases or come extremely close to it. Sometimes a single fighter or a couple of bombers or even one lone carrier can tip the scales in a game. As mentioned before, even empty carriers can be put to good use.

Note: Letting a carrier or sub sit in a strategic location for a prolonged period of time to prevent the enemy from sneaking by/through/etc is not leaving a ship idle. That ship has a job.

I dare somebody to give me a valid reason to put a ship in moth balls...

Well Im not sure if this one will pass, but I like to leave 1 or 2 single battleships on/near likely areas where the person Im playing against will try and sub attack from.

Well, that's sort of like the sub/carrier at strategic points. Those bb's aren't really idle. What I'm referring to is (for example) sending carriers from Africa to sit above the USSR to attack Asia and once the bombers/fighters are out of nukes/exhausted just leaving them there the rest of the game with nothing else to do.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast...

Good point Ace, here! here!

I tend to just do as walrus said...leave battleships where i think subs will surface/bombers will fly over...leave carriers where i think subs will try to pass...

You can move fighters and bombers from airbases to Carriers. This strategy is very useful since airbases will respawn fighters (meaning you'll have a virtually unlimited amount of these) and you can get otherwise idles bombers moving and attacking (sending bombers back and forth between carriers and airbases can also be used to reload them when the carrier or airbase is out of nukes).

It crashes my computer when I'm reading things, though.
