Actually, in many ways the South used much more dynamic and innovative tactics than the North, and are usually credited by having far superior officers and soldiers (on a man to man basis). They were mainly hampered by a lack of foreign recognition, the inability to break the Northern blockade, and being vastly outnumbered in both men and supplies.
For instance the South were the first to successfully use a combat submarine, the first to deploy an iron clad warship, one of the first to use anti personal land mines, and went toe to toe with a vastly numerically superior force for four years (and were largely successful for most of it).
Stubborn? Yes. Wrong? Yes. Fools? Certainly not.
