Avoiding naval nukes?

Postby nrgizer » Thu Aug 02, 2007 8:31 am

I have been thinking a bit lately about what would be the best way to avoid naval nuking... It seems that if you exclude the more or less random carpet bombing of the ocean, it would be best to just have your fleet stay in place when you see incoming missiles (if you know that your enemy have them within radar range) as bombers can't be targeted to nuke ships that they can actually see (given that I haven't missed something about how to free-target bomber nukes). This means that the nuke must be targeted not on a ship, but somewhere close. At least I've noticed that my own nukes can't really take out ships unless the fleets move. Of course if your fleet is already moving, that a whole other matter.

Am I missing something vital here, or do my statements above hold?

You can zoom in all the way and take out fleets of 3 or 4 stationary fleets. Just zoom in and aim it between all the ships. I use this a lot in diplomacy games when someone isn't paying attention to their fleets :) This is also very useful for taking out groups of launching subs.

Aaah, so this is really a "limitation" in the GUI then? The crosshair clings to units, but this is allows for different "cling-distances" on different zoom levels...? didn't think of that...

That is a way to see it ;)
I wouldn't call it a limitation, rather a feature.
While you're seeing the light....this works for placing any installation, too. So you can group silos tightly together, zoom in and drop a radar in between them

SO IS JESUS! :D :D

As a reminder: I have no soul. How can I sell something I don't have? And I don't receive hand jobs. I give them.

OCEAN NUKING NEEDS TO STOP.

What an utter waste of fissile material.

It is not that useful, easy to avoid, and not to mention, uh...wastes nukes!!!

what are people thinking???

Just move your boats in ziggy zaggy motions, and sometime in circles to avoid nukes. if you are getting bombarded on the sea, well, let him hit you then. Its better that he waste his nukes on the damn boats than on your cities that are full of little happy points people. lol

(Too often have I yelled out in laughter as players waste nukes on my empty carriers late game.)

Let's say that early game a player uses five nukes to take out one carrier. It may seem like a waste, but could be a good use of resources. They not only have removed (potentially) six nukes from the game, but also removed a launch pad for bombers, the potential for fighter recon, the potential for actual ship recon, and may have opened a hole for their subs to get through.

Even nuking an empty carrier has it's benifits. It prevents the carrier from providing fighter cover for bombing attacks, limits the enemies radar coverage, and reduces the enemies ability to detect subs.

Then, once the navy is out of the way, the cities are a much easier target.

Let's say that early game a player uses five nukes to take out one carrier. It may seem like a waste, but could be a good use of resources. They not only have removed (potentially) countless (ok, no exactly) nukes from the game, but also removed a launch pad for bombers, the potential for fighter recon, the potential for actual ship recon, and may have opened a hole for their subs to get through.

A carrier might be empty, but if you have bombers that are loaded but need a launch pad, you can send as many bombers through an empty carrier as you've got.

Indeed. All the more reason to nuke it. :D
