whats the best fleet balance?
how do you make your fleets. mixed or just all off the same groups?
In a default game, I'll generally put my fleets like this:
6 subs
6 subs
3 carriers/3 battleships
3 carriers/3 battleships
3 carriers/3 battleships
3 carriers/3 battleships
The carrier/battleship mix is even, so that you get the effect of both equally, and don't have to worry about which fleet is there, just that a fleet is there.

4 groups of 3 subs, so that if one gets caught by a carrier group they aren't all dead.
2 groups of 2 carriers to find and depth charge enemy subs near my coast. Optionally split into single carrier groups dependant on continent/opponents.
2 groups of 4 battleships - carrier hunters/coastal bombard
2 groups of 2 battleships/4 carriers for coastal nuking and scouting (usually at least one set to anti-sub mode until in range)
These are subject to change depending on opponents or continent selection.

Strange game. The only winning move is not to play.
It actually doesn't work well to mix up ship types in fleets. Some people swear by it, but it's not very effective. Battleships are good at taking out fighters and carries up close. Carriers are good at taking out battleships from a distance or subs up close. Subs are good at being stealthy, nuking stuff, and taking out battleships. You might want a single token carrier or two in your battleship fleets to defend them from surprise sub attacks, but that's largely it.

I also like having 4 groups of 3 submarines.
4 battleships and 2 carriers is a solid offensive fleet, with 1 carrier anti-sub and 1 launching planes (scouting, bombing).
I usually reserve 2-3 individual carriers (solo fleets) for anti-sub coast patrol.
With the carriers left, I put them in a couple mid-size fleets for portable radar (fighters) and bombing (make sure to keep them near some battleships though).
It can also be good to have a small fleet (2-4 ships) escorting subs when at all possible. Keep them a little behind the subs and fly some fighters out ahead to make sure you don't accidentally run into an anti-sub carriers. It's also good for when your subs surface to nuke their coastline, and they send their airfield bombers out to destroy them. Launch alert fighters, and it's all good.

I believe he was asking if you could use battleships to shoot down a silo close to the coast in definsive mode (Coastal Bombardment was mentioned) The answer to that is Negative, Ghost Rider.
You can use them to shoot down enemy fighters, attacking your bombers launched from carriers, so long as you cover the whole lot with fighters as well, to make /certain/ that enemy bombers in naval mode won't simply blast your battleships out of the sky, and the bombers absolutely have to take down radar/silo sites along the coast, so that the fighters don't go away.
anyway. My Fleets..
6 battleships X 2
3 carriers X 3
2 carriers X 2
1 Carrier X 2
3 subs X 4
You'll note I don't mix fleet types. Those 2 single carriers? They're antisub mode and aircraft support for my battleships. The subs are obvious what they're used for, and the 2 X2 carriers are sub defense for my coast. The 2 battleship fleets are to clear the way for the nine carriers in flexible size to lead into battle, and clear the way for those subs.
That's my fleet composition, good luck everyone.
