I'm reading here about world.dat, and I wonder, how have they done it? How can this file be simultaneously
1)An essential file for Uplink
2)An encrypted mp3 file
3)Some 20 keys to OTP?
How's that?

1) I would have to check the code, but I think Uplink just makes sure its there.  I don't think it actually contains game information ( I could be wrong ).  I always assumed that IV requires it to bulk up size of the program so that it is less apt to be pirated.

2) That it is.

3) Anything binary data can be a key to OTP, so that's no real trick.  :)

Yes, but it's not just a one key, there are several keys!
Another thought: is there a program that can make any binary data into sound files? I'd like to know how 'War and Peace' sounds like.

All they really did was concatinate (stick together all the .jpg files) and then OTP it like one big file.  Its actually rather simple, but you would need to know how OTP works for it to make sense.  You could certainly convert any binary data into a sound file.  I don't know of any programs off hand, though.  :)

Uplink checks the filesize of world.dat to check it is present and not been hacked at to reduce the size for piracy

And I saw a piece of software a while back that would convert text into music, though it always came out with pretty freaky stuff. Can't remember what it was called, sorry

If you'll rmember the name of the software, tell me, I've asked AllExperts.com twice, and they didn't know.

I think you would probably have to use a more raw format, like wave or something.  MP3s use rather sufisticated encoding which I think would prohibit random data being used.  :)

You need to look at a page like this.  :)

Thanks for the advice, only that page doesn't work.
So, how can I do it? How do I add a WAV header?

Hmm. . .  It worked when I posted it, maybe Stanford is doing server maintence.  Anyway you will likely need a Hex editor to add the header to the file.  :)

Well, that's a problem: in spite of my name, I haven't got any experience with Hex Editing. Well, I'll try!

Sorry, I'm a n00b, what is OTP?
But do you have the questions is perhaps a better question. Only when you know the right questions to ask can you have any hope of getting the answers you desire.
