If there would be an Uplink Online

Postby mad_max » Mon May 01, 2006 6:31 pm

Let's say that there is a small group of people who can develop this game to be playable online.

Programmers have a great knowledge about dynamic web page programming, so developing game as Browser based Multiplayer Online game wouldn't be a problem.

The problem is - would players be interested in playing game from browser? Currently there is dominating stereotype that "Games should be played from a computer with appropriate executable client, and browser based thingies are nothing more than a quasi humor"...

Well of course standalone clients have some great advantages like visualy good looking graphical interfaces, e.t.c., but Browser based 'products' are completely cross-platform on the other side...

Nobody is saying that introversion will support and/or develop this project ;) It is being developed from scratch. Currently we are working on desgin document & database structure...

I have worked on computer security field for years now and i know how those things work there, so it could be semi-realistic...

As for programming - we are planning to use C# with OpenGL if votes are in favor to Standalone client type game, or PHP if in favor to Browser Based.

Of course there is a huge possibility that this project will die (as most of Uplink Online type games)

We've heard (ok read) it so many times on here.

"Well I'm serious and I've already got X done and I'm gonna start....."

Months later, it's gone. Vapourware. It will never happen at this rate. Get over it, let it go.

I'm still not sure if the fact that Bytelink has been around over a year makes us non-vapourware.... or just slow???

Any theories?

There IS one way...

1. Get rich, and I mean really rich, like a couple of millions.
2. Get a cheap hotel chamber and make your life very cheap.
3. Go to a big and good company which handles games, like eidos, ubisoft, or something.
4. Give them your millions and say you want Uplink to go online.
5. Now enjoy the game and continue living cheap.

The cheese is in the fridge by the way.

Personally this smells like Vaporware to me, but if there is one thing I know, server side scripting is ALOT easier (for me anyway) then C or C++ the two most dominate executable languages. Mostly becuase it has a easy to navigate and read doumentation where C and C++ is all over the place.
