A sequel isn't innovation, it's cashing in.
Introversion do make incredibly innovative games, but that doesn't mean that sequelse can't be innovative. Wasn't Dune 2 the game that farted in the face of all know game designs and spawned and entire new genre - the RTS?
And a sequel that's made when it's not wanted or needed, and without an attempt to make anyting more than a cynical clone of the original, is a cash-in. A sequel that's been begged for by squillions of fans and given true thought and care, isn't a cash-in.
But we're not even getting a cynical cash-in , so never mind.

I would now like to take the chance to quote what Chris said at the Darwinia release party when questioned about expansion packs, or sequels.
"No, we don't do them."
Thank you, now shut the fuck up.

I know this is a dated forum post.. but I think Multiwinia is a prime example of a vastly different take on a game (Darwinia); a new multiplayer game that takes place in the world of Darwinia. This sounds a lot like many peoples proposed ideas for a "Sequel" to Uplink: a new multiplayer game that takes place in the world of Uplink. Nothing against Introversion or Multiwinia, but this pretty much invalidates the statement "No, we don't do them." I don't see how an Uplink sequel as described earlier is an impossibility.

First off, IV have been fairly clear that, while Darwinia and Multiwinia look a lot alike, they are very different games. Different to the point that IV don't even intend to call Multiwinia Multiwinia when it is released. It is a similar game, built upon a similar engine, but all of IV's games are built on a similar engine (at least, according to much of what I have read). Multiwinia will not involve the story of Darwinia, and will be multiplayer. So, not a sequel.
That being said, even if you do want to classify it as a sequel, the point that people make when they say that IV don't do sequels is that IV have a tendency to make games that they think are original and interesting. They made Uplink, no doubt love it, but don't seem to want to revisit it. Thus, an Uplink sequel is unlikely, at best. IV don't do what people demand of them, they do what they want to do.
