Uplink Stops working and sound glitches

[exp20thcen]

I am a Freelance computer builder / repairer, however I cannot seem to fix uplink, it stops working at random times, usally when I am running several prgrams at once; I.E (monitor bypass, system monitor, trace trackers, password breaker, and log deleter). I am adding my Errorlog.txt report in this post as well as system specs in hops that yall can be of some help. Thanks.

System Specs:
Compaq corp build Presario SR1520NX with changes:
3100+ AMD Sempron proc, 1.024GB DDR, Nvidia 7600 video card w/ 512DDR2 vid ram, 480 total HD size, Windows XP w/ SP2, Direct X 9.0C, latest vid drivers installed, unsure of what verison of OpenGL.

Side note: I am running the game in win98se compatibility mode as that is the only way i can get it to start, if anyone knows how i can do without this, I appericate it.

Anoter sidenote: I have already tried different resoulutions, in game, disabling sound, disabling animation, tried safemode, tried both software rendering, and with hardware rendering, and i have tried reinstalling the game, the only thing I haven't done is tried deleting my profiles and starting over, but I hope it wouldn't come to that. thanks again.

uplink caused an Access Violation (0xc0000005)
in module AcLayers.DLL at 001b:715a334a.

It doesn't crash in uplink directly, it crash in AcLayers.DLL, it crash in Windows compatibility layer? (Is your windows fully patched?)

If you have 'sound glitches', update sound driver?


What is the error you get when trying to launch Uplink with no compatibility enabled?

I didn't know that the AcLayers.dll was part of win-compatibility, maybe this is the root of my problem. My sound only glitches when the game seems to be under high stress, or when clicking on a "3D-button" which causes the screen to change, I.E (opening a mission log, or logging into the game from start-up screen). I will check on the sound drivers, although i don't know if there will be helpful updates, the sound is still run from the motherboard. I will also check windows updates to see if i am up to date, I know i don't have SP3 yet, but every time i install it, it BSOD my computer, and it won't even start up.

What is the error you get when trying to launch Uplink with no compatibility enabled?

When there is no compatibility enabled the game simply does not run, its process does not even appear for a second in the task manager, an hourglass replaces the mouse for a second, and then disappears , and the computer does not acknowledge that I asked it to run a program.


I will reply again, if sound/winupdate fixes the problem, until then I would like to find more info out on running uplink with no compatibility. thank-you again.

To be honest, it's the first time I heard someone who could only run Uplink in Windows compatibly mode.

On the windows update front, no need to update to SP3, just do all the patches on SP2,

EDIT: On Compaq site there is a fix for your computer and SP3 (On that pages there is also some original drivers but no updated drivers, yeah for shitty tech support, and shitty SIS boards? ).

For sound driver directly try the drivers from Realtek?

You may wish to update your motherboard drivers (with SiS drivers?) and directx,

I guess you try software rendering by putting still opengl32.dll in your Uplink directory.



If your computer BSOD, there definitely something strange going on:

If it is instantly resetting, then thats XP doing a blue screen of death (BSOD), and then restarting before you can read it. Handy.

If you could right click on 'My Computer', and select Properties, then select the Advanced tab, and where it says 'Startup and Recovery', click 'settings'.

There'll be a box that says 'System failure', and in that, a checkbox labled 'Automatically restart'. If you uncheck that box, and click Ok, Apply and then OK, you'll be ready

Now grab a pen and some paper. Start Uplink. Play for as long as you can before the system crashes. If you get a blue screen, record down the STOP reason and it's code

Next take that STOP reason and go to TROUBLESHOOTING WINDOWS STOP MESSAGES
