the text is so small

Postby djmattyg007 » Mon Jan 16, 2012 12:48 pm

I really, REALLY want to play this game, but I can't, because I'd have to spend the whole time straining my eyes just to read the what must be like size 8 text. I'm aware that trying to fix it would require a lot of effort, but the difference would be like chalk and cheese.

Try lowering the screen resolution, the font size is fixed in pixels.

a) I shouldn't have to. I should be able to run it at my monitor's native resolution full-screen and it should be fine.
b) I'm running it in windowed mode at the default resolution, and the text is still small. Running it in full-screen is not an option.

The text should scale so it is readable at any size.

a) The game was written back when CRT monitors were the norm and "native resolution" didn't mean anything. Games would often be expected to run at less then desktop resolution.
b) Play in fullscreen mode then or lower your desktop resolution while you play.

I'm just offering up solutions you can try right now. I don't claim they're even remotely ideal, but don't shoot the messenger. Of course, you're free to wait for a patch if you prefer, but I would not hold my breath.

Same here... I can't read s***, this is unplayable. I really don't want to run a second xserver just to play this, that's insane.

I bought uplink for Linux in the Humble Bundle and the font in that game is so small it’s a pain to play. How can I make the font bigger?

I have seen this patch for the ipad but it doesn’t work on Linux (there is no “Data” directory, only a “data.dat” file.)

I do not want to play in fullscreen for three reasons: 1) I want to see my other applications (IM…) at the same time, 2) when uplink opens its fullscreen window it fucks up the resolution of my desktop and changes my font to make it tiny, and 3) it then crashes. Also fullscreen games at a non-native resolution look ugly and often have the wrong ratio and block alt-tab…

I noticed that uplink was trying to open “fonts/dungeon.ttf”, so I tried a few fonts and came up with something.

If you get http://dl.free.fr/nBhqPZaMA (it’s a zip file) and unpack it to your uplink’s directory, it will create the fonts directory with dungeon.ttf inside.

This is a font I made from http://www.squaregear.net/fonts/whitrabt.shtml . I changed all lower case characters into upper case, tweaked the font size to make it as big as possible without breaking stuff in the game, and fixed a couple of letters that were hard to read (R and D specifically).

The result is not totally awesome; it’s all caps so a bit hard to read, but it’s also bigger than the original font which was my goal.

Thanks to theusual for your help. Im trying your solution.
What i did:
[*] Download whitrabbit font form above link
[*] Download font editor such as FontForge (I downloaded portable version)
[*] Run FontForge and import whitrabt.ttf
[*] Go to Edit -> Select -> Select all
[*] Go to Element -> Transform -> Transform
[*] At first select Glyph origin
[*] At second select Scale and put values as you want. I stay on X: 110, Y: 150
[*] Click OK
[*] Go to File -> Generate fonts and save as dungeon.ttf
[*] Place it unter font folder in Uplink root directory

Hope this helps somebody.
Sorry for my english.
