crash

[jackbnymbl]

for some reason, whenever I run my mod, darwinia crashes. I was doing several things when it started, so I'm not sure how it happened

What error does Darwinia give when it crashes?

none, it just says that darwinia encountered a problem and needs to close.

BTW, are there any other files that would help you figure out what's wrong?

Xander found and fixed my problem (thanks), it was a blank line in my stringsdefault.txt (or whatever its name is)

Now I have another problem that I've actually had since Xander fixed the first one, but I was too lazy to post it:
when creating a new profile after loading my mod, the game crashes, and when you start is back up again, all of the research is set to level 0. I do have a Research_StartDefinition section in my game.txt, so that's not the problem.

Since my linux box can't handle graphics (3 fps - the way games (and screensavers (tripple quotes!)) were meant to be played) Darwinia is installed on a windows comp, and I have tried reinstalling, without luck.

That is hard to look at...
I've never encountered such a problem, possibly because I always boot the mod/profile from preferences.txt.
Try adding (or replacing):
Mod = jackbnymbls mod
UserProfile = some random profile

Hope it helps!

EDIT: Preferences.txt is in your root Darwinia directory. The two lines mentioned above should be near the bottom; at least, in the bottom section.
A non-existant profile in Preferences.txt will be automatically created when Darwinia starts, always for the selected mod.

It worked, getting me into the user account without taking all of the research, but then crashed on reseting a level

The reset caused a crash? Sounds to me like something being incorrectly saved to the profile... xander (or anyone else with high knowledge of modding), can you expound on this? I'm just a newb who has a dim grasp of the system.

I've looked at your posts...without seeing all the other files/scripts/strings I can't make heads from tails.
I would read your game texts actions and events and look at each script and string, map and mission file...check spelling...start all mods with a new profile.
If when testing levels, if you make big changes in the editor, you may need to make a new profile just to get back and test the mod in game mode.
Also try not to make too many changes at once before going back in and testing for crashes. Double check your mission objectives listing with your game text all maps.

...oh...try to reduce your scans size in IrfanView or something.

The only thing was, this level was working perfectly, then it stopped when I added a second level. My only guess was that game.txt was left open and then saved while using the visual level editor, but I dont see how that can cause all of these problems

I noticed in your game.txt there is no (Action RunScript mission_launchpad.txt) -or- (Action RunScript mission_netmon.txt)
...unless you have them tripped off anouther script file.
The (Event AlwaysTrue - RunScript game.intro.txt) should be listed first in the Events StartDefinition.

I see where the launchpad buildings go online and trigger the finalisland.txt but not where the game text "starts" the mission_launchpad.txt file...the same for mission_netmon.txt.

I don't know if that is the trouble or not. Look close at each step, when the mission is turned on...and when it triggers the next step...and so on.

EDIT// If what is listed in your mission file doesn't match the game.txt or vise versa... the game will just go back to your desktop...the game text won't know how to run the game.
Don't feel bad...it has happened to me several times.
