i would just like to know if they are a 3d object or just a flat .bmp

darwinian.bmp in the sprites directory.

I don't know if you've done this yet, but you should really open all the .dat files, and have a poke around in them - they're just .rar files. Change the extension, and decompress.

I second what trickfred said. Extract main.dat, language.dat, and sounds.dat and have a look. When you create a mod, you can crib from all of those files quite a bit. The directory structure in your mod needs to look just like that in data/ (the directory that the three archives expand into), and you can reverse engineer just about anything by looking through the mission, map, and script files. Poke around in the files, and I guarentee that you will be able to answer 90% of your questions.

Also, if you haven't yet, have a read through Icepick's Mod Guide, Nihil's modding guide, and The Goldfish's tutrorials. Those are all great modding resources.
