That's what happens when you:
1) edit a map file when the mission is set to null
or
2) edit a mapfile when you have more than one mission file
If it's the former, well, make sure the mission's not set to null in game.txt when you're editing. If it's the latter, keep the map and all the mission files open in a tabbed/multiple window text editor while editing (I assume Macs have an Alt-Tab equivalent, to jump out of/back into the game while in the mod editor), and make sure by-eye that no new buildings wind up with an ID from another mission file.
