After much reading of forums and some pestering of gurus I've managed to get a couple of levels (level and a bit really) together for a mod. I've only been doing this a week or so so any comments/suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Personally I found the Darwinia campaign a bit easy, so I'm planning on making mine a little harder.
The storyline is fairly simple, and not set in Darwinia. The story needs a lot of work, you will not work for Downlink Associates, that's just too corny. If there's already something called Downlink then I can change the name. A couple of the files (waves and some of strings_default.txt) are lifted from "The Enemy Within", if that's a problem I'll do my own.
The pics for the guide (Sepulveda) will be changed at some point, I just put the matrix lookalike in to see how it would work... quite well IMO.
I know the cameras are all messed up in some places.
The names of the units are streatching the metaphor a bit, I'd appreciate suggestions on that.
My 6 limbed Darwinians look like christmas trees, there's an alternate bmp in the sprites directory that makes them look like evil mutant frogs. They are meant to be bugs, I am not an artist, I will try harder.
The data tree in the firewall level will probably give some advantage in a later level (swap in a different mission file).
I see the completed mod like this...
0: Modem - Intro level, gets the story going (beta)
1: Firewall - Lots of combat, escort the DGs (beta)
2: Kernel - Green vs red DGs, links to more areas (started)
3: Filesystem - Man a search engine with darwinians and feed it from the data mines, like the mine level (planned)
4: Syslog - Lots of ants, ants are called loggers and anthills are called logs... destroy the logs (planned)
5: Execution Stack - A stepped pyramid, fight your way to the top. I plan to make strategy the focus of this one if I can figure out how (planned)
6: Global heap - Island hopping, hunt the correct data cube (planned)
... and if I get that far I'll be happy

Due to the nature of the mods, I couldn't stop you from lifting stuff even if I wanted to. :D No worries, dude, happy something I did inspired you.
Oh, and Enemy Within part 3 also had a level called 'Firewall' (Actually, FireWall, but whatever) before its untimely un-backed up demise in a hard drive failure. I suppose I should log out of Guild Wars one of these days and re-start it....

Sorry guys, I got distracted far earlier than I expected and nothing much happened with Downlink. As for the firewall, there's a gap in it hidden somewhere on the map, and you can sneak your units through. As far as I'm aware the firewall level is complete but other than the intro level that's pretty much it. If someone else wants to finish the loose ends then feel free
