The Ultimate Darwinia Modding Guide

Postby Icepick » Mon Feb 07, 2005 5:24 am

As I mentioned before, I've been working on a modding guide for Darwinia. I had stopped working on it since andcarne had released his, but I had a free day today and I was bored, so I decided to finish it anyway.
You can check it out at http://thenextgame.co.uk/modguide/
This will be availible on TNG publicly once Darwinia is released, but in the mean time, don't give the link to anyone outside Phase 2 :)

Let me know what you think, or if theres anything I've missed.

Edit: Since Chris has now made this thread public, I guess the Guide is too. I'll add a link to it on the site shortly.

Just what I'd expect from you Icepick, a well laid out guide, clear and concise. Once again I tip my hat to you, and I'll buy you a beer at the release party.

I say, let there be pictures, and let the chips fall where they may!

Etc. Nice, but maybe pictures would be fun? :D

Edit: Llama says there are pictures =( Well, 2 of them =/

Do you know much about the shp file format Darwinia uses (it's not a standard .shp, or even anything like it), and the possibilities of converting other format files into the darwinia format for use ingame.

Chris et al, anything you can reveal would be helpful :)

Hasn't someone already written a .SHP file viewer?

Just read the getting started bit of the modding guide. You have to complete the game?

Actually, to access the mod tools, just add the following to your preferences.txt file.

ModSystemEnabled = 1
Mod = none

Also, to gain access to all the maps in the game, create an empty profile directory in your 'users' folder called 'AccessAllAreas'

I'd reccomend not doing the latter until you've beaten the singleplay game at least once though.

Please do not post the cheats/mod codes, let people find them out themselves.

Oh, cmon. It's a little silly to make people walk through the rite of passage of completing the game before they're considered worthy of looking at the mod tools.

If someone wants to cheat, chances are they'll do it one way or another. I doubt many here will, though.
