Can't Find Prefrences.txt

Postby thunder_instead » Mon Aug 25, 2008 10:54 pm

This is the second PC I am installing Darwinia on in a while, and I distinctly remember having to put the renderlandscapemode = 1 thing into the .txt, but my computer can't find it (I am running Vista for the first time, too. Rather annoying).

So, I instead tried to install any of the patches, but they noise on about how it needs an installed version of Darwinia to run (of which I have...it's not seeing it).

Can anybody help me?

If it's in Programs Files, search in "C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Darwinia\" (or something like this)

Easiest way is probably to install Darwinia in a directory like c:\games\Darwinia instead of Programs Files.

Also you need to start the game once for prefrences.txt to be created.

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Darwinia probably.

So wait, put it in this file (make it, rather)?

It starts up, and I see the intro. Once I click on GARDEN it tells me it stops working...if that helps.

Not quite a fast enough edit, frenchfrog ;)

You should find preferences.txt in that directory. If you don't, probably the easiest thing to do would be to search for preferences.txt using Search.

Did that a number of times. It doesn't exist to my computer. And if it needs to start before it's made, I'm screwed. But I know I can fix it, since this is my second time through this ordeal.

Wait, it's crashing before starting?

Put "RenderLandscapeMode = 1" (minus quote marks) in a new text file called preferences.txt in the previously mentioned directory.

If Darwinia still crashes, I recommend posting your system specifications.

That directory doesn't seem to exist either. The appdata\local thing isn't there.

Ok, in that case, simply create the file in the standard Multiwinia directory. (I presume C:\Program Files\Darwinia)

It's yelling at me that I'm not allowed to save in that file (for some reason).

EDIT: Got around it yelling, still crashed when I click on GARDEN.

EDIT mk II: After a bunch of fanaggling with RUN, and the directories you guys gave me, I finally got it working.

Much thanks to the both of you.

If you own the Steam version and are on Vista, it's in C:\Users\<user name>\Saved Games\Darwinia.
Don't ask me why.

I'm guessing that the directory you are telling him to look for is hidden, which is why nothing is turning up with a search, either. Make sure that hidden directories are visible, and you might have more luck.

I think he worked it out.

Although, good point. Does Vista have an option to include hidden files in it's search parameters?
