Can't play in full screen

I can't play Darwinia in full screen.
This is the non Steam version, patched to version 1.42.
I patched it right after I installed it, so I don't know if it was the patch.

If I try to make it full screen, I get

"Error
Failed to set requested screen resolution 1024 x 768, 32 bit colour, fullscreen.

Restored to safety settings 800 x 600, 16 bit colour, windowed."

Both of the demos worked flawlessly on my computer.
Any ideas?

Edit: Nevermind, it fixed itself.
