im running a 1.8 ghz amd machine

my motherboard (after buy it i found this out) does not support AGP video cards very well. the result is i can't play games with high amount of detail/animation and i usualy have to turn on all the settings down to the lowest. to play the game, if i can play it at all.

until i buy a new motherboard this is what i'm stuck with. unfourntalty i cannot play this game because of that same problem

is there some way to have a super duper ultra lame graphics mode?(or anything to create less stress on my video card) this game is too addictive to just not play it

Sure. I'm able to play Darwinia on my laptop, which is a P3 1.2GHz Celeron with a S3 Twister HP card (i.e it isn't the best spec in the world).

Here's my prefrences.txt file:

Code: Select all

ServerAddress = 127.0.0.1
BypassNetwork = 1
SinglePlayer = 1
IAmAServer = 1

TextLanguage = english
TextSpeed = 15
HelpEnabled = 1

SoundLibrary = dsound
SoundMixFreq = 44100
SoundMasterVolume = 255
SoundChannels = 16
SoundHW3D = 0
SoundSwapStereo = 1
SoundMemoryUsage = 2
SoundBufferSize = 512
SoundDSP = 0

ScreenWidth = 800
ScreenHeight = 600
ScreenWindowed = 0
ScreenZDepth = 24
ScreenColourDepth = 32
ScreenRefresh = 60

RenderLandscapeDetail = 4
RenderWaterDetail = 3
RenderBuildingDetail = 3
RenderEntityDetail = 2
RenderCloudDetail = 3
RenderPixelShader = 0
RenderWater = 0
RenderHighDetailVirii = 0
RenderSmoothLines = 0
RenderLandscapeMode = 0

ControlUp = key E
ControlDown = key Q
ControlLeft = key A
ControlBackwards = key S
ControlRight = key D
ControlForwards = key W
ControlChatLog = key TAB
ControlZoom = key Z
ControlDeselect = key SPACE

ControlMouseButtons = 3
BootLoader = none
UserProfile = none

You should be able to use that to good effect (change the Userprofile from none though!). Don't hesitate to report back how fast Darwinia runs with those changes.

i've tried turning all the settings down, i even tried your preferences.txt file

the thing is i get wonderful framrate, around 100. the thing is i get weird graphical messups because of my motherboards agp problem

what i get looks alot like this
Image

on the demo i was able to play it fine (i presume it's because that level was smaller than this one)

on other games that i get this i fixed the problem by turning down video settings to reduce the stress on the card.

in grand theft auto san andreas, i was able to make it playable by turning down the draw distance meter, i wasn't able to see stuff as far away but i could play the game.

is there maybe a way i could do this on darwinia? maybe this would be a good idea for something to in on the next patch?

Which demo? The one with the mine carts, or the one with the huge rocket? I think I know what might be up ;)

Ok, What I'll need you to do is try remove this line from your prefrences.txt:

Code: Select all

RenderLandscapeMode = 0

Hopefully that should work. (Also make sure you've patched the full game to the current version, 1.3!)

i actualy found that mode 1 worked bettwer than the others (it reduced the problem some but not all the way)

just out of curiosity, do you think it would be plausable to have a draw distance setting under options ever?
