Hang when giving an officer and order

After herding a load of Darwinians through the first portal (can just about play D now if I don't move the mouse too badly), I tried to get the officer through it, too (apparently it is not possible, is this true, IV? Would this be to keep at least one Darwinian on each island?) After a minute or two, I decide to right-click for an order to somewhere else...the game instantly hung, no black box report - sorry. I had given plenty of orders previously, possibly hangs because the officer had no local unit to command?

There seem to be quite a few issues with Officers, and its hard to know which are related, though this sounds pretty much like my problem so I'll post it here.

On several occsaions at several different stages of the level, I try and demote my Officer, and the game hangs. It doesnt crash and therefore doesnt generate a blackbox, but it only seems to happen when you do something after or during sending the Darwinians through the radar dish.
