I see this mentioned around the forum quite a bit, mainly dealing with modding and research maxing. I admit to having no idea how to either code or read code. I am, however, curious and was wondering if someone could tell me what it is?

Edit: Never mind, further searching turned up this from xander:

Redshirt2 is the name of the algorithm that is used to encrypt those files, and getting one of the decrypters will allow you to look at your files.

I guess that pretty much answers it.

Redshirt2 is just the way save files and game resources are obfuscated. You don't really need to know about redshirt to do modding etc., but if you 'de-redshirt' your user files (which is functionally equivalent to 'redshirting' them, but I digress...) then you can edit your research levels etc.
