CANNOT EVEN START GAME

Postby philly » Sat Nov 01, 2008 9:27 pm

I downloaded Darwinia and Multiwinia off of steam. I can use Darwinia just fine, but if i load Multiwinia my screen goes black and says sync over range. I can hear the music but it won't show. I have even ALT TAB out of it and my screen stays black, so i have to restart my computer just to get it working again. Can any one help.

I have a dual core processor and ATI 9800XT.

Sync over range means that the game was trying a mode that the monitor can't do. In the start menu, click the "Open Multiwinia Profile" option. Inside there should be a file called preferences.txt

Inside that file, there's a line that might look like this:

ScreenRefresh = 60

Make sure that it's 60. If it is, and the game doesn't work, try three things:

  • Change ScreenHeight, ScreenWidth and ScreenRefresh to known working values (your desktop resolution and refresh rate is a good start).
  • Change ScreenRefresh until you get a working game (I suggest 72 and 75. You can try 80, but don't go over that)
  • Run in windowed mode (set ScreenWindowed to 1, and the width/height options to something like 800x600)

Try those and tell me what works :)

Try this key sequence while at the black screen:
[Winkey+R] cmd [enter]
taskkill /f /im multiwinia.exe [enter]

Of course, this will only work on XP Pro or Vista.

EDIT: I've been ninjad again!
