amazing anthill glitch?

Ok, so i only like 2 of the maps on multiwinia, but i reaaaaaaaally love them and spend hours playing them on domination
i like to build up an empire, leave it for a half an hour then come back and see what has happened, this usually yeilds odd, or glitchy results.
although most of the time i come back to find things pretty much the same, but evilwinians have completely destroyed on AI and infected his entire area with virus's
until today, when evilwinians took over the whole map , apart from my base
and there were those weird landsnakes EVERYWHERE, looking for the cause lead me at first to think that they had just spawned lots of them, or they had split and multiplied. but then i saw this
appears to be an ants nest that spawns landsnakes, also they attack local units the same way ants do, even raiding my base, but as soon as they grow bigger they get more independant!
is this intended to be in the game or not??
