[multi-play] Cross-platform?

Postby cycyx » Mon Nov 28, 2011 1:49 pm

Is there a possibility to play with someone using the linux port while I'm playing on Windows?

There is an incompatibility with servers.

Is this due to version number difference (1.3.1 on Linux, 1.3.0 on Windows)?

Even if there is a version difference between 1.3.0 and 1.3.1, it is compatible, as I didnt have any kind of incompatible warning. You should be able to play without any problem. Though... now I'm wondering what is the difference then... OS support only or?

Well, I tried (windows machine) with the Steam or the "standard" Multiwinia version, and my friend was running the Linux port (tar.gz).
If I hosted a multi-player game, he got a warning about incompatibility, and I got the same warning when he hosted a game.

So basically, I think there is something strange going on.

Any technical advice/insight?

Okay, I can confirm this issue. After hosting my own server as "Linux" version, it defined itself as incompatible with linux client, while at windows version it was compatible.

This is mostly what I seem to have found as issue:
Linux Host is incompatible with Linux Client.
Linux Host is compatible with Windows Client. (Just a note, not issue)
Windows Host is incompatible with Linux Client.

It seems that this is affected with Mac 1.3.1 too, but I'm not sure yet.

I'm definitely getting this issue playing with the latest Mac and Windows clients: games hosted by one aren't joinable by the other.

On the same LAN:

So basically, you can't play multi-player with a Linux machine... :/

There should be some way to spoof.
I'll send you a PM of modified Windows version. Try playing with it or hosting.

Hi,

Just to let you know that we were able to play a Domination game with your latest binary (Windows host, Linux client).

Worked flawlessly!
