I have read the docs carefully, yes.

I know it's specified as "dimension", but the problem is what to specify after dimension. I've tried "overworld", "region", and not specifying a dimension at all. At least one of them ought to work, but no.

I can look into a nether map as well, but they always end up looking horrible.

Horrible is still better than nothing. About the error, I think you might get good help in their IRC channel.

In the meantime, I have gotten my hands on a separate VPS and was thinking of running a parallel server with the same whitelist, with all sorts of odds and ends - mods, snapshots and the likes.

I have been meaning to look into Feed the Beast Unleashed, an amazingly bloated yet (partly) somewhat intriguing mod, I think. This would probably be the first modpack to run on said server.

Thoughts?

I would have to mod my client as well... Eh, why not. The launcher allows more than one installation now anyway. Go for it. New map, yes?

Feed the Beast is a different launcher entirely. I just plugged mine into a Feed the Beast folder in my Games/Minecraft folder. It keeps a separate, modded Minecraft jar (currently 1.5.2), along with all the resources.

There is currently a Creative Mode test server running on elyon.net, which will probably also be the address of the real server.

Would I be able to join?

I was a bit bored today, so I decided to make the largest size map and explore it fully. I simply expanded one of the existing maps.

The first thing I found was this:
