Let's go.........RANDOM!

The place to hang out and talk about totally anything general.

Congratulations. I was recently on holiday to poland and visited Auswitzch-birkenau, saw a bunch of Israeli soldiers there. Is that part of the service?

Sometimes. I'm not sure what the requisites are, maybe it's about luck and timing, some of us go and some don't!

Personally I've never been offered the chance, and AFAIK no one from my unit went - at least during my service. Also possible, that it's only for higher-ranked officers and NCOs (I'm not sure NCO is the right term - it's what translators are pointing me at).

Also... I don't think I'd have went, if offered. I'm not that interested in the whole subject.

Congrats!

Since you (seemingly) don't find them enjoyable, here's to hoping you never need to!

Well, I actually did enjoy the sadly infrequent shooting ranges. I was just mentioning that it won't happen again - gun laws are a lot stricter around here. But besides, even if I was legally able to own a gun, I don't think I would.

So.

Apparently I have real trouble keeping this place up to date recently, looking at my history of occasionally popping up once every few months here and then forgetting all about this place again. (Currently breaking 8 months of idle, holy crap!)

In any case, long story short, I've temporarily left behind the Netherlands and have been living in Sydney for a month now due to a Uni internship. Will stay here until halfway through December, after which I'll spend a couple of months travelling the continent. Any suggestions for stuff to visit/see/do while I'm down under, or maybe even some IV Aussies to meet up with? For now, anything in central east NSW is a good option - I have a car so weekend trips are easy - and after that I'm travelling roughly along the lines of Sydney - Melbourne - Tasmania - Melbourne - Broken Hill - Adelaide - Alice Springs - Darwin - Mt. Isa - Townsville - Cairns - Brisbane (so basically exploring anything but WA). Already ticked off most of Sydney and parts of the Blue Mountains (with of course more in weeks to come, one weekend isn't nearly enough to see all of it) and have some upcoming plans to visit places like Canberra and Shellharbour. Also soaked up some...'local culture' with the NRL Grand Final and Bathurst 1000, with an AC/DC concert on their home turf still to come. Good times. :)

Unfortunately a side-note to this is that I won't be able to attend any PA release party (if that is even going to happen, since I haven't yet seen any invitation for it) but then again heading into the end of the year I'm not sure how unfortunate it is to be stuck on the southern hemisphere rather than NL/UK... ;)

You could go to an open opal mine. That town where they live in previously dug opal holes looks like a nice place to own some property. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coober_Pedy

Coober Pedy is definitely on my list, it's one of my stops on the Stuart Highway when going up to Alice Springs. :D

So on an unrelated note: I had some spare time today and somehow ended up browsing through my post history for giggles. Guess what, I actually became nostalgic for the good old days with the good old veterans, the good old naziing on grammar and forum etiquette, the good old debates on minor uncontroversial topics like death penalties and gun control, and perhaps even the good old requests for me to reboot Jelco's Weekly Poll (bizarrely, I must say - looking back I have a hard time understanding what made people enjoy them so much :P). Truly a shame this place has quieted down with the Randomness, Picture Wars and TWGs. Makes me realize that I felt not so much attached to IV as to the community back then. With most of that seemingly died down it somehow feels like my upcoming 10th anniversary in this place is going to be a bit of an anticlimax...

I haven't booted up Prison Architect in...years, perhaps. (Has it been around for that long? Sure feels like it, but maybe that's just me getting old.) I'll probably have a go at it in the next couple of weeks before my travels commence, see what's changed since alpha 5 or somesuch, whichever is the latest version I actually got my hands on. Who knows, if I really enjoy it I might actually try and get more active here again and see what the new community has shaped up to be. Maybe even start a Ladder-like project, assuming no others have properly taken off yet (I guess technically I am hosting Prison Exchange, but it doesn't look like that has seen any real activity or even development in the past few months). I look forward to building a community project again, but I'd need to feel invested to sink the necessary time into it of course. :)

Jelco

PS: I only just noticed that this topic is as old as my forum membership to the day - I never realized that. Nothing quite like a 17k-post topic that you can compare your community lifetime with to make you feel old and unaccomplished. :P

I am a graduate student at the moment, and 10 years older (at least) than almost everyone else in the department. Not to mention the children in my classes (when did undergraduates get to be so damn young?).
