I wonder how "grow and evolve" squares with Chris's lament regarding IV being "already too big and too slow to effectively compete," with new, succesful indies?

Do you need to be careful what you evolve into?

Well, look at it this way. You all know the story about how Chris secretly worked on Defcon while he was meant to be working on Darwinia? Well, back when it was just 4 people that wouldn't have been such a risky prospect but now IV has 10+ people to support so suddenly the risk is higher. It's not a matter of evolving into something different its more like being a parent - you have people who depend on you now so you can't just go out do what you want.

That's exactly what I was thinking reading Chris's candid account of 2008...there are more people relying on each other at IV now, there's more responsibility. I suspect you all feel responsible for each other...nobody wants to let their friends and colleagues down.

But...

Chris wrote about being frustrated, about working on projects he didn't want to be working on...it could have been a blog about his new job at EA.

Are you not afraid IV might turn into the very games company you didn't/don't want to work for? A corporation churning out anything to pay the bills and putting the stuff you really want to produce, the dangerous, radical stuff, on the back burner time and time again?

I realise while I'm writing this it's easy for me to say all this...it's easy to be idealistic looking in with nothing tangible to lose...and I won't be offended if you tell me to mind my own business

I'm just immensely interested in where IV goes next. I hope it's from strength to strength.
