SDL_SetVideoMode failed

Postby Sneo » Tue Aug 14, 2007 8:40 pm

I get this error in my debug.txt:

SDL Version: Compiled against 1.2.11, running with 1.2.11
Defcon 1.42 linux built May 14 2007
Parsing archive main.dat...DONE
Client listening on port 5011
Parsing Coastline data (1776 islands) : 27ms
Parsing International data (2753 islands) : 11ms
Parsing City data (2745 cities) : 22ms
SDL_SetVideoMode failed with 'Couldn't find matching GLX visual'. Switching to 16-bit Z-Buffer.
SDL_SetVideoMode failed with 'Couldn't find matching GLX visual'. Can't continue.
SDL_SetVideoMode failed with 'Couldn't find matching GLX visual'. Can't continue.

I'm running Ubuntu and installed it via the Feisty Repositorys. This is just the game demo.

Also running a Dell Dimension 3100 with onboard graphics. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Do you have direct rendering enabled?

Code: Select all

glxinfo | grep render

Thanks for the reply, I'm new to linux! So don't really understand the whole graphics / gaming side of it yet.

Sounds like you don't have much 3D capability at all just yet. :(

A quick Google shows that you have one of the dreaded Intel onboard graphics chipsets. It may well be worth trawling the Ubuntu forums for some answers!

Getting GLX to work correctly with Intel onboard graphics chipsets - specifically, "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900".

Glad to hear it! So it was basically a driver problem. As is so damn common with Linux.

This is one of the biggest aspects of Linux I want to improve. Some of the error messages in linux SUCK. And if you run a program from the GUI and it errors out you get NO ERROR. It's an extremely poor design that shows the system is still optimized for programmers and CLIs.
