Thanks for the clarification as such. I should have reread the OP, as I thought he had both problems joining and hosting from within defcon. Running dedcon wouldn't do him any good in that situation.
He could always try to run dedcon then indeed.

You are both correct.

If I just run the server as is, it will look for local games on the Internets, and obviously fail.

However if I bring down the Internets interface defcon will look for local games on the loopback interface, and will be able to join dedcon running locally.

Other computers will be able to see the game on the LAN as expected (as dedcon listens on all the interfaces).

Hence, this works for me :-)

Wouldn't you want to do the opposite?
Sitting in an empty, unreachable dedcon, you'll get lonely :P
