Call for testers

Postby NeoThermic » Fri Apr 04, 2008 4:10 pm

Hello.

I'm running a call for people to benchmark potential changes to Defcon. In order to apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum 100 posts on the Defcon forums
  • A full version of Defcon is required
  • Time to dedicate to benchmarking (about four hours total tops)
  • Experience with running dedcon recordings

Please post a reply to this topic detailing the system specs of machines you are able to benchmark on:

  • CPU type (Intel P4, Intel Core 2 Duo, AMD X2, etc)
  • Graphics card
  • RAM

Laptops are more than fine to beta test this patch. Windows only currently.

I will be selecting a small group (about 10 people) on Monday the 7th.

Hmm, I'd sign up, but I can't be certain I'd have four solid hours to test, unless it happened this coming Thursday (Apr 10th) as I'll be working from home that day.

If so.

Intel P4 2.8 Prescott
9600xt Radeon AIW
512mb PC3200

Man my system is getting old.

Edit: 2500th post! Thanks zanzer7! Didn't notice it. And I can proudly say, they weren't all spam! :P

Just to clear any confusion, it's not four solid hours that is required. It'll be four hours total, give or take. (about an hour per benchmark, with about four to run).

Code: Select all

Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 (2.4 GHz, clocked at 2.76 GHz)
2 × nVidia GeForce 8800 GT XXX, SLi enabled (Factory overclocked at 670 MHz)
4 GB DDR2-PC6400 (800 MHz)

I can run overnight tests too, if this should be of any help.

EDIT: That was your post #2500, Ace Rimmer - let me be the first to congratulate you!

Darn, that's the week that I have finals and a move back to Arizona. Wish I could, but I doubt I'll have the time.

Ack, you're kidding me? That matrox looked interesting to test. What platform are you on? I might be able to sort something.

I would be happy to help. I will need to be pointed in the direction of instructions for making and using Dedcon recordings, as I don't rightly recall how to make use of them, though I have made several. Anywho:

Testing without an NDA? Woo, who could resist? Two systems available here:

Reasonably High End:

Code: Select all

Intel Core2 Duo E6750 2666MHz, 2 GB Ram
NVidia GeForce 7900 GTX, 512 MB Ram
1280x1024 LCD

No chance this machine will be fillrate limited in Defcon :)

Crappy Old Laptop:

Code: Select all

Intel P4M (yeah, yeah, but it's keeping my lap warm in the winter :) ) 1800 MHz, 512 MB Ram
NVidia GeForce2Go, 32 MB Ram
1600x1200 LCD

I guess I'll have to run the tests at a lower resolution there to see performance improvements.

xander, on Windows: just doubleclick on the .dcrec recording and connect your client to the server that appears on the LAN browser. Meaningful testing will probably mean that we'll be running recordings NeoThermic points us at, we won't need to make new ones.

NeoThermic: you may want to add "Knows how to turn of VSync" to the requirements.
