Of the battleship... meh, blame it on Soviet intelligence.
Not sure what I'd color for Africa... Most of the big superpowers involved in the Cold war were, obviously, the US (either Blue or Green), Russian (ALWAYS red), the scattered nations in Europe (Spearheaded by Britan). China became a nuclear power and for some reason I always see them as being yellow on tactical displays.
One answer to that is to use what the origional RISK did for it's colors- (NA=yellow, SA=teal, EUR=blue, AFR= Red, ASIA=Green, AUS=purple). In DEFCON though, the colors aren't that exact (There is only one shade of green, and pink replaces purple).
In the end I don't know of any nuclear-capable nations that acted on their own during the cold war. They were influenced by the US or Russia in some way like the middle east was. And though China and GB can be seen as 'affiliates' to the larger superpowers, they still pretty much acted on thier own, and weren't pawns in the nuclear chessgame (as Soviet-Sino relations fell through, eventually).
Anyways, the point of my last wallpaper was to get some of the unit icons down and associate them with some equivelant used in the coldwar. I wanted to use the carrier for the U.S. and the Submarine as a soviet variant, but I decided to include more than just the US-USSR, since this isn't a 2 player game.
Yeah, vector graphics are fun in Illustrator.
