I can offer SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop as well as the openSUSE dists, and some help with getting them fixed if they don't work for Defcon ;-) (I happen to work there.)

I've found scouting rather hard as well, though: Trying to scout before Defcon 1 and before the silos have gone into nuke launch mode is very likely to get the fighters shot down by the first silo or other fighters, while the silo and airbase themselves are still way out of radar range. Trying to sc...

I found it works better for me in CrossOver. There are other issues, though.

I really, really want the Linux version. I doubt WOPR was running Windows. ;-)

(Ok, it probably was VMS, but still ... Unix is more like it.)

Carriers drop charges to actively go looking for passive subs. Otherwise, you'd never be able to find a passive sub.

In active sonar mode, everybody else around will see them too, and I think will be able to attack them, as well.

And then there's of course the rather dumb AI, which will place a fleet far away from you, even if it is entirely useless. Take a look at the rolling demo to see what I mean, if you haven't yet ...

I tend to group my air bases so that they can defend my coastal regions early in the game. When I start launching bombers to go and genocide my enemy, it doesn't matter much where they take off from. There's nothing left to shot them down with ;-}

Replacing the countdown with the authentication

Hi there, I've had this idea for a mod. So, right now we have the counter count, well, time. But, thinking about Wargames, what we instead had, progressing from Defcon 5 - 1, was WOPR "computing" digit after digit of the launch code ... I think that would look fairly cool. We go through 4 ...

Well, if the arcs below the equator curved south, it would make Australia a viable continent to play as well. The alliance pattern would change, but I'm not sure it'd change for the worse. It's not a bad idea.

(However, right now, stability & performance sort of take precedence.)

I've got to admit, the first thing I care for at this point in time is a) more stability & performance, and b) a Linux version. (Assuming that the performance problems and so on are mostly inherent to the engine, I guess just a port wouldn't help me much.)

Ever since watching Wargames, I was hooked on telecommunications and hacking, and wanted to play Global Thermonuclear War against WOPR. If not for that, I might have become interested in, oh, sports. So I turned geek.

I'm running Defcon on my laptop (Radeon M300, 2GB RAM, 2Ghz CPU), and I also see it eat a _lot_ of memory and CPU, and when I actually _win_ one of the fleet battles and then launch all my fighters and bombers, latency goes through the roof. That's with lowest gfx details, sound and so on. I know th...
