Just in case you are on OS X, it's slightly less obvious - control-click/right-click on the Darwinia app and choose 'Show Package Contents'. The folder that comes up will contain 'main.dat'. You can then use something like UnRarX to decompress it.

Just a note that panning around when using the editor requires holding down the right mouse button - the regular Mac way of holding down CTL and left-mouse to get right-mouse functions does NOT work, so you cannot use the editor with the standard one-button mouse, nor use the trackpad on a laptop. Got a bit further, now that I figured that you can only pan around in the editor using right-mouse (and CTL+left-mouse doesn't work on a Mac?), at least I can now point the camera in different directions and see what it does.
