Ever wanted to know what is REALLY going on in the mind of a Darwinian? Well now you can!

We are delighted to announce that the source code for Darwinia and Multiwinia is now available to buy from our online store, including immediate digital download.
Click here to go straight to our store to buy.

The code is distributed via an online subversion repository, where you can not only access the vanilla sources, but also create your own branches to share with other developers. Purchase of this product also grants you access to the Darwinia and Multiwinia development forum and wiki, where you can discuss mods with other developers.

For those specifically interested in modding Multiwinia, we are running an entirely separate Metaserver for multiplayer testing. Each copy of the Soure Code includes five authentication keys, meaning you can code changes to Multiwinia and test with 4 players and still have a key spare.

Note: You will need Windows and Visual Studio 2008 to build the games. We have tested that the code compiles correctly on the PC, but you will need to put some effort in to compile for Mac / Linux. There is no Xbox code in this release.

The source code purchase also comes with a shiny forum badge, which you can see me modelling Smile

This continues Introversion's long term plan to eventually release the source code to all of its games, a process started with the Uplink Dev CD several years ago. We hope to continue doing this in the future!

Have fun!

I'm pretty interested to see what's going to come out of this, particularly for Multiwinia.

/me checks date on calendar

No, not the first of April. Woo!

Edit: I wasn't around when the Uplink DevCD was a hot topic, so I have to ask: are we allowed to share compiled binaries with the general public, as long as we keep to some basic rules, like not disabling authentication in MW? Or is there some other way to get our hypothetical work out there?

Apparently my computer couldn't believe this much more than I did when I saw it in my RSS reader - it crashed immediately!

Great news! Very Happy

Wow, just wow.

/me is really hoping a proper mapmaking community is going to roll out of this with a semi-public editor on the loose.

But I'll be really honest, this also brings up another thought: This doesn't mean IV is having money troubles, does it?

I doubt it. When I went the IV offices last year they mentioned that after Darwinia+ they wanted to try and focus more in the community this year, and a Darwinia source code release was mentioned (although only in the capabilities of why one hadn't been released. It's good to hear that's been dealt with).

So this, along with the Defcon steam patch, sounds like IV going with their promise. Personally I'm happy to hear Very Happy

I recall a petition for this so many years ago. "Great Darwinia-get of 2007" or some stupid crap like that. The_Goldfish was all like "Seriously, you make Darwinia this awesome story-telling game, made with awesome. You could give me the code and I'll do it" and we were all like "We want the Darwinia code!" and a petition happened and holy shit it actually worked in the end?

So... who wants to make the tanks functional?

Can you paste the terms of use of the source code here please?

I would be surprised if it was something FOSS-compatible, although it would be interesting if the code was open and you actually sell access to the latest svn.

Terms of the source code would be nice before we purchase anything. Wink

Y-- yay?

*reads thread*

On the topic of forum badges, I won two beta test matches against developers! Why was I never rewarded anything for my trubbles?!

I second a clear sense of what sort of licensing this source code comes with.

I know the name similarity of your next game might make a Subversion repository seem like a good idea, but ... srsly?

Yeah, sure we can just use something different locally. Still, the same would be true if a different SCM was used in the first place and we wanted to use svn locally, though.I just think svn needs to die a quick, yet painful death.Hi mum!
