 |
|
Hello, I made this set for my own use, most icons are modelled on real NATO military icons. One exception is an airbase icon, which is basically a simplified view on a 2-runway airfield from above.
Hmmmm how do I post pictures? This is my first post here.
Hope this works. OK this is scaled down PNG version of the screenshot.
- Radar base icon is based on official NATO military symbol (I added the circle though). I just hate the original radar icon.
- Battleship icon is based on "surface combatant" military icon. Imagine looking at the ship from front.
- Carrier icon is also based on military icon, although it's changed to look better and to accomodate for little aircraft icons below. Again, this is simplified view on the carrier from the front (not from the side!).
- Sub icon is unchanged (I like the original).
- Air defence base icon is also based on military icon (thing that almost looks like, well, penis )
- ICBM base is also based on military icon (it's this triangle thing, that looks like billion times better and more menacing than original game triangle).
- Finally, an airbase icon is not based on a military symbol and is basically a simplified view on a 2-runway airfield from above.
Aitcraft icons are unchanged (those are fine as they are IMO).
I'll post the download package and installation instructions in a couple hours.

| Must say I like the idea that these are 'actual' military icons ... How did you find them? |

Beside an occasional FPS and some "light" RTS like Defcon I usually play grognard level wargames, which almost exclusively use NATO military symbols. After some time you realise there is a good reason militaries use those, as they bocome instantly recognisable and much easier to use than any "descriptive icons" so to say, which try to use extensive art on something that's like 100 x 100 pixels. Unless there is inherent design need for isometric stuff, I say *always* go with good 2D symbology, especially in a real time game like Defcon, where fast reactions to threats DO count.
There is gigantic database of military symbols available here:
http://gsweb.co.uk/
Some of those, though, are bit outdated and you will not need them unless you plan on taking NATO combat commander field course or something
Personally I do feel much more comfortable playing Defcon with my set of symbols. Try it yourself
