imho leaving alliance in diplomacy shouldnt be allowed before defcon 3
reason:
recently i observed many player starting diplomacy like that: not placing units/buildings at all till defcon 4, then when they see the other players units/buildings they leave alliance, put all their units in lets say 15-20 seconds and try to rejoin the alliance

That sounds like a strategy, not a bug.

Certainly, people can do this. Unfortunately, this also means that they run the risk of not being able to place all of their units. Also, if someone leaves at Defcon 4 before placing their units, but after everyone else has, guess who is going to get nuked first?

Maaaaybe. Do you go after the person that you need to spend effort to scout, and who was smart enough to conceal placement from you, or do you go against the ally whose placements you know to be poor?

I'd like to see more diplomacy games with selectable radar-sharing, myself. It adds another component to... "discuss". "Hey, Blue! You're not sharing your unit positions with us! You want to give a reason why, or do you really want out of this alliance so bad?"

The other side of things is: I'm not sure why I don't see a bit of wrangling over unit placement in diplomacy games. Why do people rush and place all of their units super fast, then rush to defcon 1? Why not keep the speed to realtime for a while, so you can extort... er... convince your neighbors that it's in their best interest to place their units somewhere specific?

Edit: Wait. From the original post: They put all of their units in, then try to rejoin? Why does it matter at that point? If you leave, place, and rejoin, everybody's still going to see their unit positions when they join back up. The only way to avoid giving out unit positions to somebody in a standard "radar sharing with all allies" setup is to not ally with them.

my point is: this makes diplomacy basically a klick-as-fast-as-u-can-in-the-beginning contest, i dont think that this is intended

Click as fast as you can to do what? I guess you must mean leave the alliance--which is about the most foolish thing I can imagine.

If I leave the alliance as quickly as possible, nobody sees my placements, it's true. But now I'm not a member of the alliance, so everybody is gunning for me, and I have no idea where their assets lie. Myself, I'd much rather sit back and wait for everybody to place their units, then think hard during defcon 4 about where I should place my units to best counter those, and who I should try to convince to leave the alliance with me later. If I leave right away, well, I'm just asking for my country to become a radioactive crater.
