Demo keeps crashing :(

Postby popabawa » Tue Feb 22, 2005 10:09 pm

Hi guys,

I'm gutted... I was SO looking forward to this game but I'm having problems.

After launching, the demo crashes after about 30-60 seconds, I get a brief BSOD, then the PC reboots.

I've tried the demo from PC Gamer and the updated demo, both the same.

I have DirectX 9.0 installed and I've checked the registry fix mentioned elsewhere, no difference.

It's not creating a blackbox.txt file either.

I'm running an Windows XP Pro (SP2) on an Athlon XP 3200, Radeon 9600 with the very latest drivers.

Any ideas? This game looks SO good!

Hmm, this would be a hardware or driver problem I think.

Alright, right click 'my computer', hit 'properties', go to 'advanced', go to 'startup and recovery', and disable 'automatically restart'.

Hopefully you'll get a BSOD you can copy down.

You can then follow the instructions outlined here to retrieve a log file for your crash.

Please copy/paste that in here, and I may be able to help you. No promises.

Thanks, I really should have figured that out eh?

OK, the BSOD message is;

Code: Select all

The problem seems to be caused by the following files: KMIXER.SYS

 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Might be worth adding, I've had no problems with Half-Life 2 or Rome: Total War, the other two games installed on my PC.

Sorry... hit 'submit' a little early on my last message!

With ref. to the 2nd part of your message, I don't have a C:\Windows\LogFiles\Watchdog folder, there's no \logfile\ folder under \windows\

Are there any avaliable windows updates?

A quick google revealed http://download.microsoft.com/download/ ... 86-ENU.exe

But I'm not sure if it'll fix your problem.

Edt:Looks like that fix is Win2k only.

http://forums.winxpcentral.com/showthread.php?t=7505 has other people with your problem

Edit2: Another thing you can try - Go to Start>Run and enter regsvr32 msxml3.dll, then click OK. A message should come up saying DLLRegister succeded.

Hi,

Thanks for trying to help.

From those forum postings, it looks like the ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe is a common mobo for this problem. That's what I have.

Tried the 'regsvr32 msxml3.dll' fix but no difference.

<sigh> I'll try disabling the on-board sound to see if that fixes it but I think it might be no Darwinia for me :(

Iain.
